Unleash the Power of Your Dragon Spirit Guide: A Shamanic Cacao Ceremony Journey
There is something ancient and alive in the energy of the dragon. Long before they became the stuff of fairy tales and fantasy, dragons were honoured as guardians of the threshold — beings of immense wisdom, elemental power, and transformative fire. When I first began journeying with dragon energy, I was humbled. Not everything opens to you straight away, and that, too, is part of the teaching.
In this ceremony, I invite you to come with me into the lower realm — the inner landscape of the subconscious — to meet your own personal Dragon Spirit Guide. You will be held in sacred space, guided through an energy cleanse, and carried deep into a shamanic journey with the help of my gongs. Whether you sit with ceremonial cacao or simply arrive with an open heart, this journey is yours to take whenever you feel called.
Dragon energy asks us to go within, to speak our truth, to tend to ourselves with the same devotion we offer others. Let us begin.
What Is a Dragon Spirit Guide?
In shamanic traditions, spirit guides take many forms — animals, plants, ancestors, elemental beings, and mythical creatures. Dragon Spirit Guides are among the most powerful and multidimensional of these allies. They do not arrive on demand; they come when you are ready, when the alignment is right, and when there is real work to do together.
During my own journeying in preparation for this ceremony, I encountered several dragon presences, each carrying a distinct teaching. The Black Dragon came to me during a period of illness and spoke of going within, of rest, nourishment, and deep self-care. The Air Dragon arrived with teachings about voice — about speaking with authenticity, honouring truth, and using words as medicine. And then came the Rose Pink Dragon, who wrapped the other teachings in something essential: the reminder to speak with love as well as truth, and to give yourself the same tenderness you offer to others.
These are not abstract archetypes. They are living intelligences within the shamanic field, and each person who journeys with this ceremony will meet the dragon that is most aligned with their own energy and path.
Preparing for the Dragon Spirit Journey: The Cacao Ceremony
This ceremony draws on Mayan cacao traditions, working with the plant spirit of ceremonial cacao as a heart-opening ally. Before we journey, we prepare the space and ourselves. We begin by cleansing our energy field — a practice I was taught by Kero shamans from the high Andes and have woven into my daily life for many years. Using our hands and the energy of the heart, we move through the outer, emotional, and physical layers of the aura, offering the released energy to Mama Earth, who composts it and returns it as something new.
We then call in the seven sacred directions — East, South, West, North, Earth below, Sky above, and Great Spirit at the centre — each one holding us in a complete circle of protection and blessing. In the East, we welcome the dragon energy directly, honouring fire and new beginnings. In the West, we acknowledge the cave, the descent, and the dreamtime. Every direction has its medicine; every direction contributes to the whole.
If you are sitting with cacao, use your cup as an offering as you call each direction. If you do not have cacao today, your intention and your breath are equally sacred.
Journeying into the Lower Realm to Meet Your Dragon
The lower realm — also understood as the inner realm or the subconscious — is where we travel during a shamanic journey. Unlike the middle realm, where we live our everyday lives, the lower realm is a landscape of nature, mythical beings, and ancient intelligence. It is not a place of darkness or danger; it is a place of depth.
To enter the lower realm, we work with a simple but powerful technique. We begin with a body scan and a progressive relaxation, inviting the nervous system to soften. We then awaken the third eye, visualising a point of pure white light expanding out through the body and energy field, eventually encompassing the whole earth in a hug of loving light. This expansion, followed by a drawing back of consciousness, creates the conditions for a genuine shift in awareness.
Once settled, we imagine a place in nature — somewhere real, somewhere known — and we travel there in our awareness, seeking a portal downwards: a cave, a tree root, a pool of water. We drop through it with clear intention: to meet the Dragon Spirit Guide that is most aligned with us at this time. The gongs support the journey throughout, occupying the analytical left brain so that the imaginative, shamanic right brain can roam freely.
Whatever arises for you in the journey is valid. You may receive visual imagery, or you may have a felt sense, a knowing, a voice. All of these are legitimate ways of receiving. When you meet your dragon, spend time with them — ask their name, ask what they carry, ask how you can work together.
What Dragon Energy Wants You to Know
The dragons that have come through in my own journeying carry teachings that feel universal as well as personal. The Black Dragon speaks to going within — to honouring the need for rest, for replenishment, for turning inward before reaching outward. In a world that prizes constant productivity, this is radical medicine.
The Air Dragon speaks with voice and truth. Are you saying what you mean? Are you speaking from your deepest knowing, or from habit and fear? This dragon asks you to examine your words, your silence, and how you either honour or diminish your own voice.
The Rose Pink Dragon carries the teaching of love — not the soft, sentimental kind, but the deep, steady love that begins within. Before you can offer genuine care to others, you must offer it to yourself. Therapists, healers, carers, and parents know this truth, and we also know how easily we forget it.
Your dragon may bring entirely different teachings. Trust what comes. The intention you set before you journey shapes what arrives, but dragons have their own agenda too, and they are wiser than our questions.
Closing the Ceremony and Returning Home
Every ceremony needs a proper closing. After the journey, we give thanks to the dragon, to any other guides who appeared, and to the ceremony itself. We then travel back up through the portal, through the layers of the earth, and return to the body with the golden protective mist guiding us home.
We close the circle by releasing each of the seven sacred directions in turn, thanking every being that joined us, and returning the space to the everyday world. This is not merely ritual politeness — it is energetic housekeeping, a recognition that what we opened must also be consciously closed.
After the ceremony, I always encourage journaling. Write down everything you remember, even if it seems strange or fragmentary. The meaning often becomes clear over the days that follow. Dragon medicine tends to work slowly and deeply, like roots finding their way through rock.
How to Prepare for This Ceremony
Prepare your ceremonial cacao in advance — a standard ceremonial dose is around 40–42g; a daily/lighter dose is around 20g
Find a quiet, comfortable space where you will not be disturbed for the duration of the ceremony
Sit upright if you wish to remain awake and remember the journey, or lie down if rest and deeper surrender feel right
Have a journal and pen ready for after the journey
Set a clear intention before you begin — what are you calling in, or asking your Dragon Spirit Guide to help you with?
Optionally: light a candle, burn incense or herbs, or place meaningful objects on a small altar
Ensure you are well hydrated and have eaten lightly beforehand
