Unlocking Your Faerie Spirit Guide: How to Connect and Harness Their Power
My name is Sorrell — Plant Spirit Medicine Woman. And the name Sorrell itself means fairy bells. This plant is considered much loved by the fairies, and I have carried that connection all my life.
When I was growing up, I believed I could see the fairies. That perception has shifted over the years — now I feel them most clearly with my eyes closed, with my imagination alive and open. But for me, that is just as real. The fairies do not require physical sight. They require presence, openness, and play.
This ceremony is an invitation to meet your own personal faerie spirit guide — the fairy who has been waiting to work with you, to offer you wisdom, healing, and a more enchanted way of moving through the world. We enter this journey with ceremonial cacao as our heart-opening ally and the gongs as the portal through which we slip into the spirit realm.
This ceremony can be experienced at any time of year. The faeries are always present. The door is always open.
Who Are the Faeries and Why Connect With Them?
The faeries are not the delicate, decorative creatures of children’s books. They are ancient, living intelligences — deeply woven into the fabric of the natural world. They are the invisible ones, the magical beings who share this Earth plain with us: gnomes, elves, the spirits of plants and trees, the wild elemental forces.
When I call on Mama Earth during ceremony, I also call on the faeries — asking them to come forward and connect, to be with us as we journey. They are playful beings, creative beings. They do not respond well to seriousness or force. They respond to reverence, to joy, to an open heart.
Your faerie spirit guide is the specific fairy who would like to work with you — the one who resonates with your energy, your path, your gifts. Meeting them is an act of remembering. Many of us felt their presence as children. This ceremony is an invitation to feel that again.
Cleansing, Sacred Space, and Opening the Seven Directions
Before we journey anywhere, we cleanse the energy field. I use a Kero shamanic practice from the shamans of the high Andes — scooping love and light from the heart, drawing it up over the crown, and washing it down through the outer layers of the aura. We give those heavy energies to Mama Earth, trusting her to compost and transform them, just as she does with everything we surrender to the ground.
Then we open Sacred Space by calling in the seven directions. I think of this as tuning a radio — we tune to the frequency we want, so that only the good stuff comes through. We call in the East and the spirit of Eagle and Condor to carry our prayers. The South and Mama Snake, who teaches us how to shed the past and walk softly upon the Earth. The West and Mama Jaguar, the warrioress who helps us face our shadows. The North and Hummingbird, who reminds us to accept only the sweetest into our lives.
We call in Mama Earth below, Father Sky above — and Great Spirit, the creative force that flows through all things. Once this circle is open, we are held, we are protected, and we are ready.
How the Shamanic Journey Works: Lower Realm, Spirit Animals, and the Fairy Door
On the shamanic path, we understand consciousness as layered. The Middle Realm is everyday reality — the world we share right now. The Upper Realm holds our higher self, our soul tribe, our spirit guides. The Lower Realm is the inner world — the subconscious and superconscious — a landscape of unspoiled wilderness, of forests and lakes and mountains. It knows everything: past lives, future lives, the teachings we most need.
When I first journeyed to meet my own faerie spirit guide, I was drawn downward, into the Lower Realm. This made sense to me — the faeries are beings of the land, deeply connected to the plant people and to nature itself. It is in that wild inner landscape that they wait to be found.
The journey begins by imagining a tiny point of pure white light — a little like Tinkerbell — leaving through the crown chakra and flying to a place in nature that you know and love. From that place in nature, you find a portal downward: a hole beneath the roots of a tree, a cave entrance, a door in a fairy tree, a dive through water. However it comes to you, follow it.
In the Lower Realm, the first guide you meet is a spirit animal — a power animal who has come to protect and escort you. Ask it three times: are you my spirit guide? On the third asking, the truth comes through. Listen to what this animal tells you about how it lives, what it eats, whether it moves by day or night. Every detail is a message.
Then, with your animal at your side, you travel deeper into the landscape to meet your faerie spirit guide. Ask their name. Ask what gifts they bring. Ask how you can work together. And when you find them — have fun. The faeries are playful. They love to be met with lightness.
The Role of Cacao and the Gongs in Opening the Spirit Realm
Ceremonial cacao is my heart-opening ally in this work. Mama Cacao moves from the digestive system into the bloodstream and lymphatic system, gently awakening the heart chakra and the third eye. She helps you see what you need to see, feel what you need to feel. She is an optional extra in this ceremony — but if you are joining with cacao, prepare your cup with intention and offer it to the seven directions before you drink.
The gongs play twelve to thirteen different sounds simultaneously. This bathes the nervous system in vibration, guiding the brain into a shamanic state of consciousness — a state in which we can perceive the quantum field, receive information from the spirit realm that our ordinary waking mind cannot access. I often describe it as turning on a television to the quantum field: your mind begins to see the pictures that are always there, waiting.
Together, the cacao and the gongs hold you in a sacred container for the journey. You are safe. You are held. I am with you throughout.
After the Journey: Honouring Your Faerie Guide and Integrating the Medicine
When I call you home, the Silver Thread tightens and pulls your consciousness back through the layers of the earth, through the crystal caves and the roots of trees, up into the middle world and back into your body through the crown chakra.
Before you leave the Lower Realm, I always invite you to offer yourself in service to your faerie guide. We have asked so much of them. What do they need from you? How can you honour them? How can you make space for them in your garden, in your home, in your daily life?
Ask them, too, for a sign — something that will tell you when they are near. A sound, a flash of light, a particular plant in bloom. So that when you return to the world, you will know them.
When the journey ends, have your journal close by. Scribble down the name of your fairy, the animal that came through, the messages and visions you received. If you found the name of your faerie guide, look it up — names often carry deep symbolic meaning that speaks directly to your path.
The faeries are not a one-time visit. They are relationship. They are companions. And they are waiting for you.
How to Prepare for Your Faerie Spirit Guide Ceremony
Prepare your ceremonial cacao if you are joining with Mama Cacao — have your cup ready before the ceremony begins
Find a warm, cosy space where you will not be disturbed — wrapped in blankets or sitting up supported if you want to stay fully awake
Dim the lights or use an eye mask
Have a journal and pen nearby to capture names, images, and messages immediately after the journey
Keep a glass of water and tissues close — emotional releases are welcome here
Choose a place in nature to begin your journey — a garden, a forest, a mountain, a lake — somewhere you have been and feel safe
Hold a loose intention for the journey: healing, guidance, or simply the adventure of meeting your guide for the first time
Remember: if you fall asleep, that is fine. Deep rest is welcome. If you want to remember the journey, sit up supported rather than lying flat
