Balancing our Earth Element: A Cacao & Shamanic Journey

We are made of the elements. Earth, air, fire, water, and ether — these are not abstract concepts but living forces that move through us and around us every moment of every day. Without earth there is no physical form. Without water, there is no flow. Without air, there is no breath. Without fire, there is no sun, no warmth, no life. And without ether — the space between — there is nowhere for any of it to exist.

This ceremony is the first in a series of five — one for each element — in which I guide you through a shamanic gong journey to meet each element in turn, discover where you may be out of balance, and begin the work of restoring harmony. We begin with Earth, because Earth is our foundation. It is where all healing begins.

What Is the Earth Element?

Across every ancient wisdom tradition that has mapped the elements — Chinese medicine (approximately 2,000 years old), the Ayurvedic system (around 5,000 years old), and the Mayan medicine wheel (thousands of years old) — there is a remarkable agreement about what the Earth element means. These systems arose independently, in different parts of the world, and yet they describe the same qualities, the same imbalances, the same medicine. For me, that convergence is one of the most profound confirmations of universal truth.

In the Mayan medicine wheel I work with for my cacao ceremonies — chosen deliberately because cacao originates from those Mayan lands, and it feels right to honour that lineage — the Earth element is held in the West direction. It represents our mothering and caring qualities, our generosity, and our boundaries. It manifests physically as our sense of touch and our connection to the body. When our Earth element is balanced, we are natural huggers. We give and receive physical affection with ease. We feel grounded, strong, and free from anxiety.

When our Earth element is out of balance, we withdraw. We overthink and worry. We may have given too much of ourselves — over-caring to the point of exhaustion, which is one of the most common causes of burnout in modern life. Or we may have neglected ourselves entirely, prioritising everyone else’s needs while our own go unmet.

The Earth Element and the Physical Body

In Chinese medicine, the Earth element governs our digestion — the stomach, spleen, and liver energy and how they flow together. Our digestive system is quite literally how we process what the world offers us, whether that is food, ideas, or experience. When our Earth element is strong, we digest well on all levels: physically, mentally, and emotionally.

A few questions worth sitting with when you come to this ceremony:

  • How is your digestion? Is your stomach strong and settled, or do you carry tension, discomfort, or sensitivity there?

  • Are you nourishing yourself with good-quality, clean food and water? Or are there habits of junk food, sugar, or cold foods (which, in Chinese medicine, literally freeze the digestive fire and cause the stomach to slow down)?

  • Are you resting enough? Are you mothering yourself, or burning the candle at both ends and giving everything to others?

  • Are you in the right relationship with your boundaries — knowing when to say yes and when to say no?

The Earth Element and the Mind

On a mental level, the Earth element is about how we process ideas and bring them into physical reality. Many of us are gifted at receiving inspiration — the ideas come, often brilliant and beautiful, carried in on the air element. But without a strong Earth element, they stay floating in space, never grounded, never manifested. The frustration of having a rich inner world that never quite lands in the outer one is a classic sign of Earth imbalance.

A strong Earth element is the engine of manifestation. It takes the vision and brings it down, roots it in matter, makes it real. If you have been struggling to move your dreams from idea to action, this journey may offer you some insight into why.

The Earth Element and Our Emotional World

Emotionally, a healthy Earth element gives us the capacity to be grounded, centred, and calm even in the midst of difficulty. We can feel our feelings without being swept away by them, because we are anchored. We know where we end and where another person begins. We can nurture others without losing ourselves.

Earth imbalance often shows up as anxiety — the ungrounded, circling, restless worry that has no clear object. It is the feeling of spinning, unmoored, unable to land. Coming back to the Earth element — through this ceremony, through time in nature, through grounding practices, through tending the physical body — can bring remarkable relief.

The Ceremony: A Journey into the Crystal Cave

In this ceremony, after cleansing our energy field and calling in the seven directions, I guide you into the lower realm — the shamanic inner world — via a giant tree in an enchanted forest. Inside the roots of the tree is a spiral staircase, lit by candles, descending into the earth. At the bottom waits a cave, and in that cave, the five Elementals are gathered in a circle.

The Earth elemental stands and takes your hand, leading you deeper into the cave — until the walls begin to glitter, and you realise you have walked into a giant crystal cave. Light reflects off the crystals in every direction, creating rainbow colours across the stone. It is a place of extraordinary beauty and stillness.

Here, you sit with the Earth element. You hold hands. And I invite you to ask: Where am I out of balance? What behaviours or patterns are unbalancing my Earth energy? What do you need from me? And what can I offer you in return?

The teachings that come through cacao ceremony tend to be wonderfully practical. Do not be surprised if the Earth element gives you very simple, grounded guidance: eat better food, rest more, and say no to something that is draining you. The wisdom of the elements is not abstract — it is immediately applicable to your daily life.

Towards the end of the journey, I ask you to offer something in return — a practical or spiritual gift to the Earth element of our planet. We are in a reciprocal relationship with the Earth, and the best relationships are ones of balanced giving and receiving. Even a small, sincere offering matters.

The Role of Cacao and Gong

Cacao is entirely optional in this ceremony — the journey works beautifully with just intention and the gongs. But for those who choose to drink it, ceremonial cacao is a gentle, heart-opening ally that deepens the experience considerably. As it moves through your system, it begins to release serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin — the hormones of connection, relaxation, and wellbeing. It softens the analytical mind and opens the channels through which spirit communicates.

The Earth Gong — the large, deep-toned instrument that anchors this ceremony — works with us to ground heavy energies, open the heart chakra, and support the descent into the deeper states of consciousness where visioning becomes possible. The gongs guide us from beta (our everyday awareness) through alpha, and into the theta and delta states — the daydream states where we are still awake, yet able to vision as if in a dream.

It is worth noting that the Earth element is, by its nature, a restful and grounding energy. If the gongs and cacao carry you into a deep sleep during this ceremony, that is not a failure — it is the Earth element giving your body exactly what it needs. Trust it.

How to Prepare for the Ceremony

A little preparation will help you get the most from this experience:

  • Prepare your ceremonial cacao before we begin, so you are ready to drink as we call in the directions. If you prefer not to drink cacao, a cup of tea or simply your intention is equally welcome.

  • Create a comfortable, supported space — a reclining chair with cushions, or lying down on a mat or your bed. Have a blanket nearby, as body temperature can drop during deep rest.

  • Use good headphones or speakers close to you to receive the full range of gong frequencies.

  • Have a journal or paper to hand — the insights from this journey can fade quickly, like a dream on waking, and writing immediately afterwards helps you capture and integrate what you received.

  • Give yourself a gentle day afterwards — rest, drink plenty of water, and spend time in nature if you are abl.e

  • Come with an open question: Where am I out of balance in my Earth element? What am I ready to receive today?
