Journey to meet Mama Earth: A Free Shamanic Cacao & Gong Ceremony
Of all the journeys I guide, this one feels the most fundamental. Not a journey upward to the spirit realm, not inward to meet a specific plant or animal — but downward. Into the earth. To meet the being who birthed us all, who holds our bodies safe while our spirits travel, who receives every prayer we offer and composts every grief we release back into nourishment.
Mama Earth is always there. She has never gone anywhere. It is we who have forgotten how to meet her consciously. This ceremony is an invitation to remember — to go down through the layers of the earth, through the mud and the roots and the crystal caves, all the way to the place where she waits for us with infinite patience and infinite love.
Why Journey to Mother Earth?
In this ceremony, the intention I hold for us is one of the deepest questions any of us can bring: Why am I here? What is my path on this Earth? Mama Earth holds the answer to this question more completely than any other guide, because she knows us from before we were born. She received us. She shaped this lifetime for us. And she has been watching us walk our path, patiently, ever since.
You might also come to this ceremony with a request for healing — physical, emotional, or something you cannot quite name. All the medicines of this earth are made from what she gives us. She is the source energy behind every remedy, every herb, every healing practice. To go directly to that source and ask for help is one of the most powerful things we can do.
There is also space in this ceremony to offer an apology. As a species, we have caused immeasurable harm to Mother Earth and to our fellow earthlings — the plants, the animals, the ecosystems that hold life together. Coming into a relationship with her consciously means acknowledging this and asking to learn a new way. The path of the shaman is the path of the earth keeper: learning, again, how to live in harmony with all our relations.
Your Shamanic Brain: Right, Left, and the Genius Between
We all have a shamanic brain — we are born with it. In the simplest terms, the left brain is linear, analytical, and knows where we are in time and space. It remembers our name, our address, and where we begin and end. The right brain is intuitive, creative, and feels as vast as the universe. It has no clear sense of where we end, and everything else begins — which is exactly why it can receive information from the quantum field, from spirit, from the deep intelligence of the earth.
That right-brain knowing is the part of you that senses when someone is not being truthful, even when their words sound fine. It is the part that feels into the room when you walk in, that knows something before you can explain why you know it. It is not a special gift — it is simply a different mode of intelligence that most of us in the Western world have never been taught to develop.
Einstein is a beautiful example of what happens when these two intelligences are woven together. He struggled at school until his parents took him out and taught him to play the violin. Nurturing his right brain through music unlocked something extraordinary: his dyslexia became his genius. The two hemispheres wove together, and from that weaving came a new way of seeing reality. That is what we are practising in shamanic journeywork — and what the gongs support so powerfully.
Giving the Whole Planet a Hug
One of the things I love most about this particular ceremony is a moment early in the guided journey where, before we descend into the lower realm, I take our expanded consciousness all the way out to hold the entire planet in light. We expand our awareness until it wraps around the whole Earth like weather systems — and from that vast perspective, we send love and healing to the places that need it most.
The ravaged rainforests. The oceans are filling with plastic. The places of war and famine. The animals. The relationships between humans and the natural world are asking to be restored. We are not only here for ourselves in this ceremony. We are here as channels for the light, as earth keepers, as the gardeners we were born to be.
The Ceremony: Descending to Meet Her
In this ceremony, I play the Mother Earth gong as the primary instrument — she chose this one, as the gongs often do. After cleansing our energy field and calling in the seven directions, I guide your consciousness out through the crown chakra and across the world to a place in nature that feels deeply safe and connected to the earth. Woodland is beautiful for this journey, but trust wherever calls you.
From there, we look for a portal downward — a hole through tree roots, a cave, a rabbit hole like Alice in Wonderland, a fairy door in the trunk of a tree. Whatever your imagination offers is exactly right. We descend through muddy layers, through the roots, through rock, through crystal caves, going deeper and deeper until we pop out into the lower world landscape — an unspoiled, wild, natural earth.
Here, a power animal comes forward to guide you — whoever arrives is right for you today. They lead you to Mama Earth herself. She may appear as a goddess, as a being of light, as the earth itself, as something you cannot quite describe but know without doubt. When you meet her, you are welcome to offer whatever apology or gratitude feels true, to share your intention, and to ask for the healing or wisdom you came seeking.
The journey is held in a beautiful space where your conscious imagination initiates the story and your right brain — your subconscious, your mega-conscious — gifts back the symbols, feelings, and teachings that arise from that deeper intelligence. Trust what comes. Write it down immediately afterwards, like catching a dream.
How to Prepare for the Ceremony
Bring two things to this ceremony:
Your place in nature — somewhere real and familiar where you feel safe and connected to the earth. Somewhere with soil, trees, or water is ideal
Your intention — you might use mine: ‘Why am I here? What is my path?’ Or bring a request for healing, a question about your relationships, your work, or anything you are carrying
Practically:
Prepare your ceremonial cacao before we begin — hold your intention in the cup as you drink
Create a cosy, supported space with cushions, a blanket, and dim lighting
Use good headphones or speakers — the Earth gong’s frequencies are particularly deep
Have a journal and pen ready for immediately after
Go barefoot if you can, or at least have your feet flat on the floor — physical connection to the earth deepens this particular journey.
Drink water and take time to integrate gently after the ceremony
Come Home to the Earth
Mother Earth is always there. She has never stopped holding you. This ceremony is simply a way of consciously remembering that — and of bringing that remembering into the body, the cells, and the daily choices that make up a life. I hope she offers you exactly what you need today.
