Resting in the Winter Light: A Yuletide Tradition

The winter solstice, the longest night of the year, marks a turning point. It's a time when the sun begins its journey back, promising longer days and renewed life. In ancient times, this pivotal moment was celebrated at Solstice, followed with Yuletide, a 12-day period of rest, reflection, and rejuvenation before we return renewed at New Years.

This is a practice I have personally engaged in for several years now and I look forward to it immensely. What I notice most is how different I feel compared to others who have been exhausted by their family’s and societal demands to present at all the parties and the "buy more, be merry" mantra of Christmas.

My tweenage kids have also grown to love the new tradition we have created as they get 12 presents over 12 days. This makes a big difference to how much they appreciate each gift and also gives me 12 opportunities to see their faces light up with delight - and get a little break as they are entertained each day.

So if you would like to reclaim your power at Yuletide read on…

Reclaiming the 12 Days of Yuletide

In our fast-paced world, a 12-day pause might seem impossible. But the beauty of this tradition lies in its adaptability. You can tailor it to your lifestyle, creating pockets of stillness within the hustle and bustle.

Practical Ideas for Creating Space

  • Winter Solstice Ritual: Begin your Yuletide journey with a simple ritual. Light a candle, meditate, or simply sit quietly, acknowledging the turning of the wheel of the year.

  • Digital Detox: Designate specific times for screen-free zones. This could be an hour each morning, an evening ritual, or a full day each week.

  • Mindful Consumption: Reduce your commitments and say no to unnecessary social engagements or work projects.

  • Nature Connection: Spend time outdoors, even if it's just a short walk. Pay attention to the subtle changes in nature. We need at least 15 minutes of sunshine a day for vitamin D levels to be healthy, so when the sun shines - make the most of it!

  • Cozy Reading Nook: Create a cozy reading nook with blankets, pillows, good lighting and your favorite books.

  • Slow Down Your Meals: Take time to savour your meals. Eat healthily, mindfully, without distractions.

  • Creative Pursuits: Engage in creative activities like painting, writing, ideally with no agenda to produce a result, just exploring the creative act for the joy it brings.

  • Restful Sleep: Prioritise sleep. Establish a calming bedtime routine and create a serene sleep environment.

The Power of Rest

Rest isn't just about inactivity. It's about slowing down, recharging, and connecting with your inner self. By embracing the spirit of Yuletide, you can experience a deeper sense of peace, renewal, and gratitude. And when the New Year comes, we are ready for the adventures ahead with renewed vigour!

Remember: The 12 Days of Yuletide can be your biggest gift to yourself. Embrace the opportunity to rest, reflect, and rejuvenate.

May this winter solstice bring you warmth, light, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Rest well, dream deeply, and we'll see you in 2025! 💫
